Resource Landscaping is excited to be relocating its lawn maintenance services to the great communities in Idaho.

What’s the first thing you notice walking by someone’s yard? We bet it’s how green and healthy the yard looks! Well, to get that spectacular appearance, it isn’t as easy as you may think. First, you need to set a schedule of when to cut and water the grass; then, you need to know when to aerate, add fertilizer, and weed control. So the best way to say it is…Timing is everything in lawn care!

That’s where our knowledgeable team comes in because we know how important it is to have a regular lawn maintenance program to give your yard a healthy environment where your lawn can flourish. Our goal is to enhance your yard and give you outstanding curb appeal.

What are the five best lawn care steps to follow?

  1. Water regularly, and don’t cut your grass too short.
  2. Aeration
  3. Weed Control
  4. Fertilization
  5. Hire a professional lawn maintenance service.

One of the best rules of lawn care is never to cut your grass too short. When you keep it longer, it retains water, giving the root system the strength it needs to deter weeds. We all know weeds fight with your grass for nutrients, so why not control them any way possible. Another advantage of leaving your grass longer is that it protects itself against insects and diseases. A good thing to follow is to mow your grass approximately 1-2 times a week unless the weather is too hot as it can cause damage to your lawn.

Always try to water your grass between 3-9 am to give it the nutrients needed for a healthy growing season. Keep in mind that the hot sun can evaporate the water before it has a chance to soak into the ground, so try not to water on those hot summer afternoons. Did you know that an inch of water each week can help keep your lawn looking healthy and green?

Our recommendation is to install an irrigation system to conserve water and help alleviate having to remember when is the best time to water. If you want to create a healthy atmosphere for all areas of your yard, you may want to have both a sprinkler and drip irrigation system. When you have a sprinkler system, it covers a large area of your lawn, whereas a drip irrigation system gets directly to the root of your plants and trees. Now, let’s add the best part, and that’s that most systems work off a smart device and can be scheduled to water when you aren’t home.

Did you know that aeration adds oxygen to your lawn? It helps it to breathe and take in nutrients needed for a strong root system. Try to water a few days before you aerate; this will soften the ground and give the core aerator easier access to remove the soil plugs. Did you know that you shouldn’t pick up the soil plugs? You want them to decompose and add nutrients and microorganisms back into your lawn. Once you have completed aeration, this is a good time for overseeding. When you have these open holes in your lawn, it gives the seeds a quick way to take root into the ground and give your lawn that thick green appearance. The best time to aerate in Idaho is in spring or fall.

Something to consider is to have our dependable team handle the aerating of your property as the equipment is quite heavy and not easy to maneuver around the yard. Not to mention how time-consuming it is to have to rent the equipment and spend a day working in your yard!

We all have the same goal when dealing with weeds, and that’s to get rid of them forever! But, as much as that is a great concept, we know that weeds show up every year and are the most time-consuming part of every gardener’s life. Don’t you just hate it when you see that crabgrass growing on your beautiful lawn? (Or maybe it’s quackgrass, which is very common in Idaho!) Whichever you find in your yard, one thing for sure is the best way to tackle them is to add herbicides.

With so many weed control products to choose from, you always want to read the labels to ensure you use the correct herbicide to get rid of the weeds. If you are trying to prevent weeds, then a preemergents will give the best results as it’s applied before the weed ever has a chance to grow. If you already have weeds and want to kill them on contact, then a post-emergent will be your best plan of attack. Unfortunately, weeds will make their way into your yard no matter how hard you try; it can happen by not practicing proper lawn care or birds picking up seeds from your neighbors and dropping them in your yard. So our recommendation is to have our knowledgeable team provide superior lawn maintenance service and help take control of your weeds.

Fertilization is the best meal you can give your lawn, but knowing the right time is half the battle. When you fertilize your lawn, it gives it the nutrients needed for a healthy growing season. For example, you want to jumpstart your yard in the early spring when the grass is starving for nutrients and looking to create a strong root system. Then, once the ground reaches 55 degrees, you would apply another treatment to give it an additional boost,  followed by summer and fall. You will get excellent results by following this process, especially from those cool-season Idaho grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue.
